Our public transport system is not much of a system, and design is not high on the agenda of city planners. Yet like every aspect of life here, someone, somewhere, gets a ray of inspiration, and something wonderful is realised. The simplicity and elegance of our old bus stops, is an example of this. To me, they are the ‘red phone-boxes’ of Kuwait. Form and function sculptured into an icon.
I’m in London, so I did some shopping last night. What’s great about being in a city you know, is that the hassle of finding things goes away. I had a free couple of hours this morning and my plan was simple… To step out of the hotel, and go to the first gallery/museum/show that appeared on the side of a bus.
If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration for your photography, read the flickr blog. Back in June, I read a post titled Past Present(ing), and I immediately started my research. I looked for old photographs of Ealing, where we live(d) in London, printed them in Kuwait ready for this post. Today, I took some time alone and went on a shoot walk.
I finally managed to get a photograph of this bus. The British School of Kuwait BSK brought it over from London. I feel it’s underutilised and wish they would use it a little more… Maybe in spring when the temperatures are more bearable.
Next week is Eid and the three-day holiday will be complimented by two extra days. This is the case for all government schools and most private schools. Noor will join us on holiday even if her school will still be open.
Kuwait is not really quite back to school until after Eid.
This is one of my favourite night shots of London. I have a large print of it displayed in my office. The unmistakable colours of Piccadilly Circus and the London bus/taxi create the perfect postcard moment.
I’m in Picadilly Circus. I took my bike on the train into Waterloo and spent the whole day (I mean from 8am to 8pm so the whole day) taking photos of London. The weather was surprisingly helpful.
This photo was a special one because not long from now, we will not see many more of these classic double-decker buses. The Routemaster is slowly but surely disappearing from the streets of the capital 😦
